Pleurisy is a pathology affecting the lungs, and more particularly, the membrane surrounding them called the pleura. The condition may result from inflammation of the pleura and / or the presence of abnormal fluid in the pleural cavity.
Performed for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, pleural puncture is the removal of fluid abnormally present in the pleural space, between the two layers of the pleura (the chest wall and the lung). The operation will be performed using a trocar inserted between two ribs. The puncture is said to be exploratory in the event of liquid being taken only for the purpose of its analysis, for diagnostic purposes. The puncture is said to be evacuating if, in addition to the analysis, the goal is also to evacuate as much fluid as possible.
Strim Health Care offers different needles for safely performing pleural drainage or biopsy.
